I spent 2012 and 2013 advocating for marriage equality in New Zealand. So it was a bit of a shock to have to do it all again when I arrived in Australia in early 2017. My partner and I were caught amongst the intense debate about Australia’s same sex marriage plebiscite, an ill-thought through attempt to have a public discussion about who should have the right to marry in Australia. Fortunately, there was a good political outcome in the end but the process wasn’t pretty at all. I wrote about my experience of the plebiscite in a feature article for Stuff New Zealand’s weekend paper, published in The Dominion Post, The Christchurch Press and a range of other titles.
